DIY Witch Hazel Pore Minimizing Toner

Making your own beauty products can be healthier, less expensive and often, satisfying to make. Toner's and masks are a simple way to change over to DIY and more natural products. I started making my own lotions, moisturizers, toners and masks quite some time ago. Believe me, there were some failed attempts before I had the techniques and recipes right. This toner is great for all skin types, inexpensive and easy to make and can have a few variations to suit your skin's needs.

Basic Witch Hazel Toner

1/3 cup Witch Hazel (find in most drug/grocery stores. Check in first aid section)
1/2 cup water
2 Tbs lemon juice

Options to customize the basic Toner:

Oily or Acne Prone skin:
2 Tbs Rubbing Alcohol
5-10 drops Tea Tree Oil

The rubbing alcohol will have a drying effect on the skin and can be omitted or reduced if  it is leaving your skin too dry. Tea Tree oil is a wonderful anti-fungal and antibacterial. We use it for many things around the house and is well worth having. The scent is a bit strong and may take some getting used to.

Dull Dry Skin:
Increase Lemon Juice to 1/4 cup

The lemon juice will act as a skin lightener, reducing the appearance or dark spots and evening the skin tone. The orange oil has anti-inflammatory properties,  increases collagen production and improves blood flow to the skin. Be aware that the the higher level of Citric Acid may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. The scent is very invigorating and fresh! This is my personal favorite, It makes pores less noticeable after one or two uses and leaves skin firm and smooth with regular use.

Extra Soothing:
Omit the lemon juice
1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe has been praised for centuries for it's healing and soothing properties. This one is great if you have sensitive skin, frequently red or dry skin from the elements. I would recommend this for skiers or anyone spending a lot of time outside in the snow, or wind with mildly chapped skin.

After you choose your recipe, mix all together in a jar or bottle and shake well. Store sealed.

To use: wash face, remove make up, shake toner well, wet a cotton ball or pad thoroughly and wipe over entire face and neck, avoiding the eyes. You'll be surprised at how much ick it picks up! Can be left on under moisturizer or make up. Use twice a day.
